Two Student Research Fora were held this Academic Year. The first was during the first semester on September 27, 2011 and the second was held for three evenings on February 21, 22 and 27, 2012. Both fora were held at the M. T. Oliverio Foundation Conference Hall. The event was co-sponsored by the Central Student Council (CSC) under the leadership of CSC President, Noel Lagunday, and the Center for Research (CFR) under the direction of Dr. Veneracion Cabana.
The first semester presenters were: Sherwin Bandao, School of Theology, “The Interpretation of the Clause, ‘Thou Shalt Not Leave My Soul in Hell’”; Ham Geg Manggasang, School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), Biology Department, “Survey of Dragonflies and Damselflies at Mountain View College”; and Advent Joy Montessa, School of Education (SOE), “Speaking Exposure and Stage Fright.”
The second semester presenters were from the School of Computing (SOC),School of Business and Accountancy (SBA), SAS and SOE. Three groups of SOC students presented the results of their software development projects as follows: “Automated Bulletin Board System” by Lea Mae Amor Bungabong, Darenne John Daculos, and Elbert Jonathan Bunjan; “Automated Daily Time Records System at MVC” by Mark Enanyog, John Paul Alitao, Kim Baliton, and Rod Jimenez; and “MVC Faculty and Student Tracing System” by Roselle Paye, Amelito Apdian, and Roniel Pame.
Louella Vale Panal, a senior SAS-Biology student presented “Diatoms as Indicators of Pulangi River Health.”
Three SOE students gave presentations: Emelita Paronda, “Level of Language Learning Strategy Use of Non-Filipino Second Language Learners of MVC;” Angel Barnuevo, “Personality and Self-Esteem” and Irene Gay Tulba, “Personality and Art Attitude.”
Two SBA students, Gabriel Lamorin and May Ann Sanchez presented “Intrinsic Motivation and Organizational Commitment” and “Emotional Intelligence in Relation to Leadership Styles of Supervisors in Mountain View College,” respectively.
A panel of evaluators judged the presenters at various nights. These included Dr. Daniel Dial, President; Dr. Chliejvferwyn Catolico, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Apolinar Paulican, Dean, School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) and CFR Statistician; Dr. Ian Abordo, Associate Professor, School of Education, Accreditation Coordinator, and CFR Senior Research Associate; Dr. Rosie Sotes, Director, Center for Quality Assurance; Mr. Gideon Delos Reyes, Dean, SOC, and Mr. James Sumagaysay, Associate Professor, SAS Department of Biology. The presentations were judged according to originality (50%), quality (20%), and relevance (30%).
Based on the scores, the top three winners were chosen and prizes were given per article presented as follows:
First Prize of P1000: Lea Mae Amor Bungabong, Darenne John Daculos, and Elbert Jonathan Bunjan, “Automated Bulletin Board System,” (SOC)
Second prize of P750: Louella Vale Panal, a “Diatoms as Indicators of Pulangi River Health” (SAS-Biology) Third prize of P500, Sherwin Bandao, “The Interpretation of the Clause, ‘Thou Shalt Not Leave My Soul in Hell’”(SOT).
The awarding was done after the Midweek Prayer Meeting on Wednesday, February 29 at the MVC Alumni Church.
A consolation prize of P100 was given for each presentation. All prizes were courtesy of the CFR. Certificates and free snacks were provided to each attendee. According to the CFR Director, the winners will be sent to re-regional and national student research conference. There was an air of enthusiasm reflected in the fact that after the first night’s program, more students volunteered to present so that the program had to be extended one more night.
The CFR wishes to thank the students who contributed to the success of the program: the devotional leaders, the devotional speakers, Jason Montera, Rodolfo Tangente, and Ham Geg Manggasang; the musical groups who gave special music and intermission numbers; CSC President Noel Lagunday for the overall coordination, Abner Labadan for sleepless nights designing and printing the program and certificates, Ham Geg Manggasang for making sure the nightly program ran smoothly; Murphy Arcilla for photo and video documentations; Phil Clinton Carbonel for making sure there was money for the snacks; Louella Panal, Rethetalyn Diestro, Jesame Grace Rada, Lyka Pactol, Redeem Testa and Gondi Badao for being extra hands, and most of all, the PRESENTERS. Biology presented, “Morphology and Identity of an Endemic Fern Species in Bukidnon, Philippines.” Mrs. Sumagaysay described a previously unrecorded endemic species which was collected and identified at Mt. Pinamantawan in Sto. Domingo, Quezon, Bukidnon. She hopes to publish the findings in an international biodiversity journal. Both presentations contained part of her graduate thesis. Both received excellent reviews from the attendees as indicated by the mostly “4” score on the evaluation sheet and some “More of the same” comments.

The theme was “The Power of Forgiveness in My Life.”
The Hon.Gordon Torres, Bukidnon third district Board Member and owner of PCC, welcomed the class. The visit was facilitated by Mr. Rowell Luwaton, PCC Dean of Student Affairs. After the welcome, the teachers and students were divided into small groups and assigned to different classrooms for their discussion.
In the afternoon, each group reported and shared their testimonies and experiences. “The retreat was a revival for us teachers. Indeed, we were blessed so much,” one faculty member commented.
After the reporting, Dr. Garilva inspired the church members with a short message. This was followed by a commitment service. The church was revived and everyone felt the power in forgiveness.

“The performance of our graduates in the December 2011 NLE,” she says, “was really remarkable. First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Lord for His grace and for granting Jerald Pelayo and Jierell Mae Saguinhon to top the Board Exam.
During our fasting and prayer every Saturday for four months, we requested the Lord to allow the graduates to top the board exam to show to the world that our young people excel among the prestigious schools in the Philippines. To God be the glory!

The program started with a devotional. Dr. Daniel Dial, College President, rendered a musical piece for the moment of meditation and Mrs. Sharie Mae Cruzada, BSN instructor, sang the opening song. It was followed by the opening prayer of Pastor Clyde Sumatra. Before Dr. Abelardo Era, former MVC president, gave the message, Mr. and Mrs. Gideon delos Reyes gave a musical number.
Hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Winston Mojica, the second part of the program included the Know-your-Mate Game, Love Geometry Game, Body Talks and Instrumental Numbers.
Dr. Dial and Pastor Jaffet Legario gave the closing remarks and the closing prayer, respectively.

Those who will attend are asked to come in semi-formal attire.
The program will start with the welcome remarks of Pastor Jaffet Legario followed by the opening prayer of Dr. Olivia Vasquez. Mr. Dann Merk Arellano will lead out in the singing of the National Anthem.
It will end with the closing remarks of Dr. Ian Abordo and the closing prayer of Pastor Simeon Rodrigo, retired minister.

The group visited the following places: Ma. Cristina Falls, Hinaplanon, Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, and Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation..
The activities included touring, viewing of the Typhoon Sendong devastated area, participating in a Disaster Preparation Seminar, doing a University Visit, and mall shopping.
The trip aimed to hold the major activity of the School of Education Student Council, meet the requirements of the Field Study Courses by visiting universities and laboratories, and foster a closer relationship between the teachers and students, as well as among the students.

Prof. Wilma Ang, went to Davao and General Santos Cities for a three-day fieldtrip, February 12-14.
Sixteen students visited the following tourist spots: Lake Sebu, Punta Isla, and Lemlunay Resort. They visited the Sydney Hotel, Davao Mission Guest House, and Grand Men Seng Hotel where they had a formal “Eat all you Can” dinner. The group also went to Chinatown and the Ayala and Gaisano Malls.
The activity aimed to: (1) make students learn how to manage an event; (2) let them experience touring; (3) expose them to the different sectors of the tourism and hospitality industries; (4) help them evaluate the tourist attractions and hospitality industries; and (5) help them apply leadership and human relation skills.
“The trip was successful and enjoyable. This was one of the unforgettable experiences I had while in MVC,” said Elme Faye Fernandez.
“Seeing the beautiful scenery made me realize that every creature that God made has his/its own purpose,” added Mary Ann Sanchez.

Some of them started working for MVC during the first semester of Academic Year 2011-2012.

Gil Gabano Micua
Mr. Gil Micua, head of the MVC Office of Advancement, Public Relations, and Alumni Affairs, was born in Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur. After finishing his elementary education from the Imelda SDA Elementary School in Caloocan City, he studied at the Philippine Union College (PUC) Academy, Baesa Campus. In 1984, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree, major in Accounting, from PUC (now Adventist University of the Philippines), Silang, Cavite. He is a candidate for graduation from his Masters in Administration, major in International Development, from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA. He has passed the comprehensive exams and is awaiting the final completion of projects.
He has had varied work experiences. He was the Executive Director of ADRA Philippines; the hospital administrator of the Valencia Sanitarium and Hospital (VSH); and the director for Philanthropic Services for the South Philippine Union Conference.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) conferred on him the Distinguished Service Award in recognition for his work for the Indo-Chinese refugees. He was the first Filipino Executive Director of ADRA Philippines, pioneering administrator of the VSH, founding member of the Fundraisers Network for Development (FUND) Philippines -- the association of fundraisers in the Philippines, and volunteers as CEO of Shine Philippine Shine (SPS), a non-profit Non-Government Organization.
Mr. Micua is married to the former June Daffodil Neri with whom he has two children: Ryan Gilbert, a computer science graduate from the South Philippine Adventist College, and Kyrene Larrysse, an AUP nursing graduate.
“I love the weather and climate of MVC, the friendliness and hospitality of the faculty and staff. and the challenge of pioneering the office of Advancement for MVC on its dream of becoming a university,” he commented.
Raisa Aone M. Cabahug
A faculty researcher of the School of Agriculture, Miss Cabahug is a 2011 BS Agriculture, major in Horticulture, cum laude graduate of the Central Mindanao University. After graduation, she worked as an Intern of the Business Management and Resource Development Office.
Born in Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon she finished her elementary and secondary education in the same place -- her elementary from Musuan Elementary School and from Central Mindanao University Laboratory High School, her secondary.
She is currently taking up a Masters of Science in Horticulture, minor in Agricultural Economics, at CMU. She lists swimming, photography, graphic arts and research as her special interests.
Miss Cabahug reveals that “coming from an academic institution, I see that MVC has a lot of room for improvement. I find it an opportunity, as well as a challenge, to give students a Christian education as well as preparing them to face the real work. Even if I’m still adjusting to a different type of environment here, I see it as an opportunity for me to grow holistically as well.”
Mrs. Libertine Merchie Joy De Vera Marco
Mrs. Marco, an accounting staff of MVC, was born in Cagayan de Oro City. She spent her education from the elementary to college in MVC.
She is married to Mr. Marlon Marco with whom she has two children: Keefe Matheson, 6, and Keefer Mathy, 4. Before working here, she worked in the Business Office of the Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital from 2001 to 2007. From 2008 to October 2010, she worked in Sarasas Witaed Bangbon, Bangkok, Thailand as a teacher.
Junnette Rendy Lingayon Madriaga
Before coming to MVC to work as the HRD secretary, Mrs. Madriaga was an assistant Kindergarten Teacher at the Bangkok Adventist International School and as a Kindergarten Two teacher at the Ekamai International School in Thailand.
She was born in Valencia City, Bukidnon. She finished her elementary and high school education from the Maxwell Adventist Academy, Nairobi, Kenya, in 1993 and 1996, respectively. In 2001, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree from the Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro City.
Mrs. Madriaga, who enjoys reading, is married to Mr. Dwight Kenji Madriaga. They have two sons: Seiji, 5 and Xabi, 2.
Ronnel Aldin D. Fernando
Mr. Fernando, a part-time instructor of the School of Business and Accountancy, was born and raised in MVC. He spent his elementary and secondary years in the MVC Elementary School and MVC Academy. In 2009, he graduated from Mountain View College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree, major in Management. He graduated as the Most Outstanding Senior Student, one of the Ten Outstanding Pupils and Students of Metro Valencia, and received a departmental honor. At present, he is taking a Masters in Human Resource Management at the Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro City. He enjoys singing, travelling, cooking and baking.
“Working in MVC,” he says, “was not the first in my list of workplaces after graduation. Being born and raised here, I somehow wanted to take my chances of working somewhere else. Teaching was not one of my first priorities, either. But having been given the chance to teach here, I consider this as a challenge, an opportunity, and a calling.“
